Beware of Overcharging in Taxis

Issue: Some taxi drivers may take longer routes, refuse to use the meter or ask you to pay a fix high price for the trip in order to take you there or even refuse to give you the change. especially with tourists.

  • Always insist on using the meter, you have the right to do so and it is illegal for the taxi driver not to use the meter.

Issue: Scammers dressed as monks may approach you for “donations” or offer “blessings” in exchange for money.

  • Politely decline or ignore them and walk away – legitimate monks don’t solicit money on the streets.

Counterfeit Money & Shortchanging

Issue: Counterfeit bills or shortchange from shops or taxi, especially with large notes.

Issue: Some people with so called “free” item in the street might force you to have it and then demand payment.

Solution:

  • Ignore and walk away, you can always say no.

Overprice Local Tour Agencies

Issue: Some agencies sells overpriced tour packages.

Solution:

  • Book through well known or official websites or your hotel concierge.
  • Check customer reviews before booking.

Pickpocketing in Crowded Areas

Issue: Busy areas like Mong Kok, Causeway Bay, and MTR stations might attract pickpockets.

Solution:

  • Keep valuables secure and use anti-theft bags such as those secure bags hide under your outfit and in the front.
  • Wear your backpack in front instead of behind your back in crowded areas.
