In this post, we’ll introduce you to a truly special Buddhist temple in Hong Kong—Tsz Shan Monastery, home to a majestic 76-meter-tall statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. Spanning over 500,000 square feet, the monastery offers a serene and spacious environment, perfect for relaxation and reflection amid the city’s bustle.
About Tsz Shan Monastery
Tsz Shan Monastery is located in Tung Tsz, Tai Po, nestled in the countryside of Hong Kong. To reach it, take a green minibus from Tai Po Market Station. The ride takes about 20 minutes and drops you off inside the temple grounds. Covering half a million square feet, it’s one of the largest Buddhist temples in Hong Kong.
Upon entering the central area of the monastery, you’ll find a spacious courtyard with the Mahavira Hall ahead and the Hall of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara to the right, fronted by a tranquil pond. The peaceful atmosphere invites you to slow down and absorb the spiritual energy. Inside the Mahavira Hall stands a statue of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.
76-Meter-Tall Statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara
The highlight of Tsz Shan Monastery is its 76-meter-tall white statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, holding a vase in the left hand and a cintamani (wish-fulfilling jewel) in the right. Instead of burning incense, visitors offer water at the Thousand Wishes Pond—a bronze vessel near the statue. Pouring water into the pond symbolizes purification of the mind and body. Tsz Shan Monastery Buddhist Art Museum
Beneath the statue lies the Buddhist Art Museum, showcasing sculptures of various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas on the ground floor, and Buddhist texts and sutras on the upper levels. Photography is only allowed on the ground floor. This museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in Buddhist art and culture.
The Surrounding View
From the front edge of the temple grounds, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Hong Kong’s countryside, including the Plover Cove Reservoir. The scenery—lush greenery, calm waters, and blue skies—resembles a traditional Chinese watercolor painting.
