How to Exchange Money in Macao: A Tourist’s Guide

Here are some of the things you need to know about exchange money in Macao.

1. Understanding Macao’s Currency

Macanese Pataca (MOP$) is the local currency, but you’ll find that Hong Kong dollars (HKD) are widely accepted at a 1:1 ratio (even though the actual exchange rate is different). Therefore if you trip is included Hong Kong as well and Hong Kong is your first destination, you can exchange Hong Kong dollars (HKD) before going to Macao and use for both places, however the Macanese Pataca (MOP$) is not accepted directly in Hong Kong when you try to buy stuffs or services.

Important: Always specify which currency you want when receiving change, as businesses may default to giving change in MOP.

2. Best Places to Exchange Money

Licensed Exchange Counters

These offer better rates than hotels or airports. Look for them in:

  • Central Macao near Senado Square
  • Border crossing points
  • Major shopping areas

Banks

Bank exchange counters provide secure transactions with fair rates, though they may have limited hours.

3. Money Exchange Tips

  • Compare rates: Rates can vary significantly between exchange shops – check different places before action.
  • Bring clean bills: Some places reject old or damaged foreign currency.
  • Count carefully: Verify the amount before leaving the counter.
  • Keep receipts: You may need them to exchange back unused MOP.

4. ATM Withdrawals

ATMs widely accept international cards and often provide better rates than currency exchanges. Look for machines operated by:

  • Bank of China Macau
  • ICBC (Macau)
  • HSBC Macau

Note:  There might be a charge of international withdrawal fees by your home bank.

5. Credit Cards

Major cards (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay) are accepted at:

  • Hotels
  • Higher-end restaurants
  • Entertainment complex
  • Large retail stores

Smaller shops and street vendors typically only accept cash.

7. Exchanging Back Unused Currency

Before leaving Macao, you can exchange leftover MOP back to your home currency at:

  • Licensed exchange counters (keep your original receipt)
  • Banks (may require passport)
  • Airport exchanges (less favorable rates)

Kind Reminder:

  • Exchange small amounts first to avoid left over MOP
  • Try to use up all of the MOP coins as they can’t be exchanged back
  • Hong Kong dollars are easier to exchange outside Macao if you have leftovers
